lululemon: Reimagine Store of Today

for Story and Sensation

Type: Experience Masterplan

Client: Vail Resorts

Role: Experience Lead

This full store redesign fundamentally shifts how guests experience product in the store. We conducted ethnographic studies and participatory workshops to inform every aspect of the new store experience. We developed universal guidelines that we then applied to 4 different store formats ranging from xx to xx sq ft. These guidelines impact every aspect of the experience including the floorplan, fixtures, materials, and staff interactions. We identified two areas for technology innovation—merchandising and the fitting room experience. Story arcs are flexible, modular media-enabled fixtures that react to customers' presence and bring product features and stories to life using projection mapping. In the fitting room, smart hooks allow effortless communication with staff, improving efficiency and in turn leaving more room for human connection. We prototyped both innovations in the lab and iterated to create a proof of concept.
